The copper plate for Archway, Brussels has no maker's mark. It was close in size to the plates for The Fur Cloak - Mrs Herbert [367], York Street, Westminster [382], Atelier de Bijouterie [378], The Busby [368], dating from 1887, and one from slightly later, Balustrade, Luxembourg Gardens [465].
The plate for Archway, Brussels was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the upper left corner.
