EXHIBITIONS

This etching was rarely exhibited. It was shown twice by the print dealers, H. Wunderlich & Co. in New York in 1901 and 1903. 4

An impression was shown after Whistler's death, at the comprehensive Grolier Club exhibition in New York in 1904. Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) lent his impression - probably bought from Wunderlich's - to two exhibitions in Boston, in 1904 and 1910 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2300101). 5

SALES & COLLECTORS

Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) owned an impression that was inscribed by Whistler '1st state' and 'Venice 1879' (Graphic with a link to impression #K2300101); it was sold through A.A. Hahlo & Co. of New York to Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937); it was later owned by Emma Regina Martin (1921-2009) and Charles C. Cunningham (1910-1979).
Bernard Buchanan MacGeorge (1845?-1924) owned an impression of the second state, which was sold through Wunderlich's of New York to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) in 1903 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2300202). Thomas Way (1837-1915), Whistler's London lithograph printer, owned the third state, which was also bought by Freer, in 1905 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2300302).
