Charles C. Cunningham became Director of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Life:

Charles Crehore Cunningham was born in Mamaroneck, New York, in 1910. He graduated from Harvard and went on to have a distinguished career in the museum world, working as a curator at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts from 1935, director of Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum from 1941, director of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1966 and then chief curator at the Clark from 1972. His friends and business acquaintances included many prominent curators, art historians and dealers. As a collector of prints, he had a notable collection of Whistler's etchings. His correspondence is housed at the Clark.
