EXHIBITIONS
It was very rare and not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime as far as is known. After his death, it was exhibited at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904, and Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) lent an impression to the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in Boston in 1904 (

SALES & COLLECTORS
Otto Henry Bacher (1856-1909) acquired an impression from Whistler in Venice and sold it to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) in 1904 (). Freer bought another from Thomas Way (1837-1915) in London in 1905 (). Pauline Kohlsaat Palmer (1882-1956) acquired an early impression, which may have come from the London art dealer, Walter Dowdeswell (1858-1929) (priced at £4.4.0), or from Knoedler's in New York (). Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) owned an impression (which he thought was a 'first proof') possibly bought from H. Wunderlich & Co., by 1904 ().
