The copper plate has no maker's mark. It was close in size to a number of etchings including several figure subjects (The Fur Cloak - Mrs Herbert
[367], Nora Quinn
[364] and The Busby
[368]) and continental views (Passages de l'Opéra
[386], Archway, Brussels
[344] and Balustrade, Luxembourg Gardens
[465]).
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was given by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the upper left corner.
