EXHIBITIONS

It was exhibited in several print dealers' exhibitions, by H. Wunderlich & Co. in New York in 1898 and 1903, and by Obach & Co. in London in 1903. 7 An impression was lent by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) to the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420204). 8

It also appeared in the Memorial Exhibitions after Whistler's death, at the Grolier Club in New York and, lent by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938), in Boston in 1904 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420101), and in London (lent from the Royal Collection) and Paris in 1905. 9

SALES & COLLECTORS

Whistler sold an impression on 28 April 1887 to the London print dealers, Messrs Dowdeswell for £5.5.0. 10 It is possible Dowdeswell sold one to John Charles Sigismund Day (1826-1908) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420210) or possibly to Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420208). Another impression was bought from Whistler for the Royal Collection (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420202), and sold through Thomas Agnew & Sons, London to H. Wunderlich & Co., New York, in 1906; it was bought for $200 by Clarence Buckingham (1855-1913) whose sisters bequeathed it to the Art Institute of Chicago (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420202).

An impression was sold with the collection of the late Joshua Hutchinson Hutchinson (ca 1829 - d.1891) at Sotheby's, 3 March 1892 (lot 304) and bought by Edmund F. Deprez (1851-1915) of Deprez & Gutekunst for only £1.10.0.

Early collectors in America included Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420203), John Henry Wrenn (1841-1911) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420206), and Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), who bought an impression from Dr James M. Hart in 1896 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2420204). A year later, September 1897, Whistler sold an impression to H. Wunderlich & Co. for £8.8.0, and in 1900, another for £10.10.0. 11
