Mansfield owned the only known impression, and his title 'Young Woman Standing' has been generally accepted.

DESCRIPTION

A full length figure of a woman who stands turning towards the right, with arms akimbo, hands on hips. She wears a dress with a close-fitting bodice over a high-necked blouse; narrow sleeves, slightly full at the shoulder; a swathe of material draped over her hips and falling in folds behind, over a skirt with three deep flounces. Her face is only slightly indicated, and her hair is pulled up on top of her head.

SITTER

Not identified. It is possible that it is Gertrude Elizabeth Campbell (Lady Colin Campbell) (1857-1911) (see ) but the waistline seems a little wide for that very fashionably corseted lady.

DISCUSSION

This appears to have been a portrait of a woman in formal afternoon or day-dress. As a formal portrait of large size it is comparable to such portraits as The Silk Dress [151], A Lady wearing a hat with a feather [118], and The Fur Cloak - Mrs Herbert [367].
