The copper plate has the oval maker's stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to several other Hughes & Kimber plates of the 1870s including Florence Leyland [136], Sleeping Girl [127], Nude Reclining [126] and The Desk [129].

It is not known if it was sold at the time of Whistler's bankruptcy and later retrieved by the artist or somehow kept out of the sale; however it is known that it was printed by him in 1887. The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
