Café Corazza, Paris probably dates from 1897. The butterfly signature on one impression is consistent with a date of about 1897 (). The maker of the copper plate (C. Servant) links this to Boulevard Poissonière, Paris 483 and Carpet Menders, Paris 480, both dated about 1897.
The sunny, leafy scene suggests spring or summer, and Whistler specifically commented in a letter to Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) on 'this perfect weather in this most lovely city!' in May 1897. 1

On 11 November 1897 Kennedy wrote to Whistler: 'It is time to finish the etchings of Paris now, so as to make some noise. Tell me what is going on, "busy" is somewhat vague.' 2
