Two studies of women dates from 1886 or 1887. The copper plate was close in size to The Village Sweet Shop 266, which dates from 1886, while the technique and subject can be compared with such portraits as The Little Hat 366, suggesting a date of 1887.
Although the drypoint was grouped by Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) and Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) with drypoints dating from about 1873 or 1874, the technique is quite different from Whistler's earlier work. 1
