DESCRIPTION

In the foreground, at left, stands a small girl wearing a sunbonnet. To right two broad steps and three narrow ones lead up to a doorway with an elaborate door-frame surmounted by a large carved shell and small sculptured figures. On the door is a poster bearing an official announcement headed 'MINISTÈRE DE LA GUERRE.' To left of the doorway, and above the child, is a small barred window.

SITE

The town of Montrésor is in the Département of Indre-et-Loire, France. The Château de Montrésor is a medieval castle with a Renaissance mansion, restored in the 19th century. 9

The War Ministry poster could have concerned the conscription of young men during peace-time.
