A baby wearing a light summer dress, with curly hair cut in a long fringe, and flowing over her shoulders, is sitting with her body straight on to the viewer, facing slightly toward the right, with her legs turned to the left. The feet and arms have not been drawn. There is shading in the background, especially about the head and shoulders.

SITTER

Edith, the baby niece of Bessie Pettigrew (b. 1869), Lilian Pettigrew (b. 1870) and Rose Amy Pettigrew (b. 1872). Another portrait that may show a Pettigrew baby is Gypsy Baby 373. Babies figure prominently in a number of etchings including The Baby, Gray's Inn 288, Cameo, No. 1 (Mother and Child) 459 and Children, Amboise 432.
