EXHIBITIONS
It was first exhibited by the print dealers, H. Wunderlich & Co. in New York in 1898 and also in 1903, when Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought a second state impression (

An impression was also shown in the comprehensive Grolier Club exhibition in New York in 1904. Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) himself lent one to the Whistler Memorial show in London in 1905. 14

SALES & COLLECTORS
Whistler first sold 'Quai de Montebello' to H. Wunderlich & Co. for £12.12.0 in June 1888. They sold one in 1899 and another in 1900, priced at £10.10.0. 15
Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought an impression of the second state from H. Wunderlich & Co. on 11 March 1903 (). Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) owned one by 1900 (). Another impression, sold by Knoedler & Co., New York, was acquired by Henry Harper Benedict (1844-1935), and later by Lessing Julius Rosenwald (1891-1971), who gave it to the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC ().
One impression, handled by Colnaghi & Co. - and therefore possibly from the artist's executrix Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) - was acquired by the National Gallery of Australia (). Miss Philip had
inherited the plate and kept some impressions, including a first state ( ) and had more printed by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956) ().
