KEYWORD

gallery, interior, people, theatre.

TITLE

The title is consistent apart from occasional additional accents, as in the following examples:

'Theatre Loches' (1889, Whistler). 1
'Theatre, Loches' (1902, Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932)). 2
'Théâtre, Loches' (1904, Grolier Club). 3

'Theatre, Loches' is the generally accepted title.

1: List, 18 July 1889, GUW #13235.

2: Kennedy 1902 (cat. no. 337).

3: New York 1904a (cat. no. 375).

DESCRIPTION

A view in a theatre, looking down and across the stalls to the boxes and balcony on the far side. The heads and shoulders of people in the audience, the women with decorative bonnets, are sketched in, all looking towards the right, except for a woman in a box at the far side, who looks back at the people in the stalls. The balcony casts deep shadows; the supporting pillar, at left, is decorated with an oval escutcheon or lantern.

SITE

The town of Loches in the Loire valley, France. This is the only specifically named interior scene etched in Loches.

DISCUSSION

This is one of several theatrical subjects or subjects associated with the theatre, such as Back of the Gaiety Theatre [c117], Finette [61], Irving as Philip of Spain, No. 1 [158] and Irving as Philip of Spain, No. 2 [159], and Bird-Cages, Chelsea [297].
