DESCRIPTION

A view across a broad river, busy with small boats with sails spread or partly furled, casting reflections on the water. In the distance are two windmills and a line of trees, with a dome rising above one of the buildings to right.

SITE

A view from Papendrecht, looking across the Meerwede, with the Groothoofdspoort and the Hotel Bellevue, Dordrecht, in the distance. 5 Dordrecht, a busy port and ferry terminal on the Dutch coast, was frequently visited by Whistler. Etchings of Dordrecht include Dordrecht [259] and Little Dordrecht [260]. He also painted several watercolours there between about 1882 and 1902, including Dordrecht [m0876], r.: Gold and Brown: Dordrecht; v.: Dordrecht [m0968], A Little Red Note: Dordrecht [m0969], Note in Rose and Silver - Dordrecht [m0970], Gold and grey - The Sunny Shower, Dordrecht [m0973] and Grey and Green - Dordrecht [m0976], and two oil paintings, Note en gris: Dordrecht [y293], Bleu et argent: Dordrecht [y294].
