KEYWORD

model, nude, woman standing.

TITLE

Whistler's original title is not known. It has been known by the following titles:

'Slightly indicated sketch of a nude woman standing' (1902, Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932)). 2
'Nude Figure, Standing' (1904, Grolier Club). 3
'Nude' (1905, ISSPG). 4
'Nude Woman Standing' (1909, Howard Mansfield (1849-1938)). 5

There are problems in distinguishing the several small studies of standing nudes, such as Nude Girl with Arms Raised [115], Nude Posing [125], Nude Woman Standing, hand on hip [114] and Little Nude Figure [330]. However, 'Nude Woman Standing', as suggested by Mansfield, has become accepted as a clear descriptive title for this drypoint.

2: Kennedy 1902 (cat. no. 372).

3: New York 1904a (cat. no. 109).

4: London Mem. 1905 (cat. no. 372).

5: Mansfield 1909 (cat. no. 346).

DESCRIPTION

The figure of a nude woman, turned slightly toward the left, with her arms hanging by her side. Below the knees the legs are merely suggested, and there is some shading on each side.
