KEYWORD

model, woman standing.

TITLE

Whistler's original title is not known. Only two titles have been recorded for this drypoint, which are as follows:

'Resting' (1886, Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921)). 2
'Girl Leaning' (1909, Howard Mansfield (1849-1938)). 3
'Resting' (1910, Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932)). 4

The only trouble with the title 'Resting' is that it is similar to the titles of several other prints, and could be confused with such etchings as Draped Model [109], and The Model Lying Down [110]. However, Wedmore's title 'Resting' has been generally accepted.

2: Wedmore 1886 A (cat. no. 105).

3: Mansfield 1909 (cat. no. 119).

4: Kennedy 1910 (cat. no. 119).

DESCRIPTION

A young woman in a close-fitting dress stands leaning back toward the right, facing three-quarters left. She is lit from the left and casts a shadow on the wall to right. Her arms hang straight down at her sides. A scarf or scarf-like collar is tied round her neck, with the ends hanging down. She has short hair with a short fringe. Her legs are shown in two positions, with both stretched out in front of her, and also with one leg bent. At the bottom, under the figure, there is a slight indication of a head the other way up.

SITTER

Not identified.

DISCUSSION

This is one of several summary sketches of models at rest - in this case wearing contemporary dress - including Draped Model [109] and Reading a Book [112].
