SALES & COLLECTORS

Whistler kept one impression, which he bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who in turn left it to the University of Glasgow. Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) owned one (Graphic with a link to impression #K1230104), which was sold through A. A. Hahlo & Co., New York, to Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937); it was later acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. An impression (Graphic with a link to impression #K1230102) said to be from the Cox collection (possibly that of James Cox-Cox (ca 1849- d.1901)) was bought by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) from Obach & Co. of London on 11 July 1903 - six days before Whistler's death - and eventually bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.
