Recto, above; verso, below:
The copper plate was stamped twice - rather faintly - with the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.'
Several copper plates dated to 1887 are the same size, including another Jubilee subject,
The Abbey Jubilee [296], and several London scenes (e.g. St James's Park [250] and The Bonnet-Shop [254])
as well as other English (e.g. Cottage Door [252],
Butcher's Shop, Sandwich, Kent [320]) and Belgian subjects (e.g. Children's Fruit Barrow [347]).
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was given to the Univerity of Glasgow by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
