St James's Park probably dates from 1885. A date of 1885 or 1886 is consistent with the form of the butterfly signature. It was obviously etched in summer, so after May 1885 and before October 1886.
According to Wedmore, whose catalogue was published in November 1886: 'This and the three or four preceding and following plates were etched in 1885. Their extreme delicacy must forbid their yielding more than a few impressions.' 1

1: Wedmore 1886 A (cat. no. 207).

St James's Park is the same size and has the same plate stamp as another etching, Cottage Door [252], dating from 1886, and is close in size to several later etchings such as Children's Fruit Barrow [347], of 1887: this might suggest that a date of 1886 is a little more likely.
