Boulevard Poissonière, Paris probably dates from 1897. Judging from the hot sunny day and leafy trees, it was etched in the late spring or summer. It was first recorded as sold in 1897. 1 It was probably drawn in Paris during a fine spell of weather in May 1897 that brought people out into the streets and parks (see also Café Corazza, Paris [484]).

1: Whistler, ledger, 19-29 May 1897, GUW #13034.

Whistler, who was convalescing after influenza, wrote that if Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) wanted to see his work, he should come to 110 Rue du Bac: 'I have brought all that was left in the way of etchings and lithographs down here -' 2 Furthermore, he told Kennedy, 'You are a discontented man indeed OK! if you can complain of this perfect weather in this most lovely city! - ' 3
