EXHIBITIONS

No exhibitions are known in Whistler's lifetime. One impression was lent by John Charles Sigismund Day (1826-1908) to the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London in 1905 (cat. no. 380) as 'A Market, Ostend'. The identity of the work is confirmed by the description given in the catalogue. 10

SALES & COLLECTORS

This is a very rare etching. Only two impressions of Market Place, Ostend have been located. One has a distinguished history, being owned first by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938), then Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937), and Charles C. Cunningham (1910-1979), before ending up in the National Gallery of Australia (Graphic with a link to impression #K3500102). The other was sold by Obach & Co., London, to the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, in 1908 for £18.0.0 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3500103). No impression is known in any collection in Britain or the USA.
