'Shampoo Shop, St Martin's Lane' combines the main elements of the titles used by Whistler and his wife.

A single shop-front fills the top two-thirds of the plate (drawn parallel to the edges of the plate) with the pavement and part of the street in the foreground below. A woman is seen through the open door at left, then a shop window with large panes, filled with sheets of paper (notices or posters), then, at right, an open door or narrow, dark passage. Above the shop is the lower part of an open sash window, and below that, the large sign, 'SHAVING and SHAMPOOING.' In front of the door at left is a small boy with a stick, and at right, in front of the window, a woman flanked by two girls, looking at the viewer. At far right, in the corner, is the start of a building at right angles to the shop, with a large pot at the edge of the pavement.

According to Whistler, this was a shop in St Martin's Lane, in central London. 10
