PRINTING

The first proof is in dark brown ink on light-weight ivory 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K2670104). Most subsequent impressions are in brown ink, for instance, one given by Whistler to Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901) is in brown ink, with delicate, carefully wiped tone, on 'modern' cream laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K2670114). Most are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with the butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them. However, some are in black ink, on ivory or off-white laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K2670103, Graphic with a link to impression #K2670102) and one of these, which was owned by Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) himself, is signed with a slightly odd butterfly (Graphic with a link to impression #K2670102), and another, a delicate impression, is neither trimmed nor signed (Graphic with a link to impression #K2670111).
