awning, furniture, shop, shop-front, streetscape.

TITLE

There are no variations in the title used by Whistler and later cataloguers, except in punctuation, as in the following examples:

'Furniture Shop' (1887/1888, Whistler). 2
'Furniture Shop' (1899, Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921)). 3
'Furniture-Shop' (1910, Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932)). 4

Whistler's version, 'Furniture Shop', also used by Wedmore, is preferred.

2: List, [1887/1888], GUW #13233.

3: Wedmore 1899 (cat. no. 216).

4: Kennedy 1910 (cat. no. 266).

DESCRIPTION

Two awnings, the right one fully extended, shade two shop fronts. The word 'BECCING' or 'BEDDING' is written faintly on the wall below the left awning. On the pavement at right are a chest of drawers, a table and high backed chair, and other furniture; in front of the shop at the left are more goods including papers and pictures or posters.

SITE

One of several old clothes, bric-a brac and furniture shops, probably in Chelsea, London. It is related to The Rag Shop, Milman's Row [290], which is similar in size as well as subject.
