The copper plate has the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to several plates used in Venice,
Lagoon - Noon
[209],
Old Women
[234] and Islands: Evening
[204]. It was obviously brought from London with the intention of fulfilling the Fine Art Society commission for the 'First Venice Set'.
However, it was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with A Set of Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886. It was cancelled in 1887 with many short diagonal lines, most of them crossed. The cancelled plate is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 10
