The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp, 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is the same in make and the same or very close in size to several other plates bought in London and used in Venice, The Bridge, Santa Marta

[199], and was brought to Venice specifically to fulfil the Fine Art Society's commission for a set of etchings.
The Riva was published in Venice, a Series of Twelve Etchings (the 'First Venice Set') in 1880. In 1889 it was cancelled with crossed diagonal lines.
The plate was bought by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) in 1892 and bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art. 10
