STATE
Three states are known before cancellation.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
The arch of the bridge, and the suspension bridge beyond, are etched in outline.
State 2
There are additional lines and foul biting on the piers and arch of Battersea Bridge; lines are added on the suspension bridge and water; three layers of clouds are added; drypoint shading is added on the boats, houses and church tower.
In the impression reproduced, figures in a rowing boat are drawn in charcoal in the water at lower left.
State 3
Diagonal shading in drypoint is added in the sky, just above the buildings and suspension bridge, and in the clouds below the arch of Battersea bridge; there is additional shading on the church tower; horizontal lines are added to the reflection of the pier at left and right.
In later impressions of the third state, the drypoint has faded, as in the example below:
