STATE
Five states are known before cancellation.
State 2
The shape of the butterfly signature is altered and new shading is added behind the wings.
The row of buildings at left is extended nearly to the edge of the plate; the spire at left is shaded with vertical lines and additional verticals shade the large central building and chimneys; the roofs at far right are expressed by shading; a more fully defined building, and a row of left to right diagonals next to it (\\\), is added in the right background; two posts are added on the bank at far right, where there had been one; horizontal and perpendicular lines are added to the hull of the steamer at right; many lines of the hull in the right foreground are retouched and strengthened; some lines on the hulls at the left edge are retouched, and the shapes of the flag and flag pole on the stern are slightly altered; the line denoting the bank in the jetty or wharf in the foreground, which had formerly been grossed by two short, parallel lines, is now crossed by a small 'x'.
State 3
More shading is added on the side of the nearest steamboat at right and the sides of the farthest steamboats at left; extensive soft vertical shading and horizontal lines are added over the buildings and sky in the background; more short diagonal lines extend the shading on the foremost of three boats in the water at lower right.
State 4
The side of the shed at right is drawn in vertical lines; fine diagonal lines, from left to right (\\\), cross the building in the centre; vertical lines are added below the shaded roofs at far right.
State 5
The butterfly is re-outlined.
The vessel in the centre, just under the factory, is shaded with short diagonal lines running from right to left (///) and the flagstaff at the stern is reflected in the water; the flag on a boat at the left is enlarged; details of the steamboats and the outlines of buildings are more fully defined; there are a few additional reflections of smoke-stacks and chimneys.
