PUBLICATION

It was not published. An impression from the cancelled plate (Graphic with a link to impression #K0880301) was bound with a set of cancelled etchings, most of which were intended for publication by the Fine Art Society, London, in 1879, but this etching was not included in the edition as published.

EXHIBITIONS

An impression (described as a 'trial Proof') was lent by Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) to an exhibition by the Union League Club in New York in 1881. 5

An impression from the collection of Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910) was exhibited by H. Wunderlich & Co. in New York in 1898 and bought through Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851-1938) by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (Graphic with a link to impression #K0880103). 6 Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) lent his impression ('With signature written twice') to the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900, and to the Boston Whistler Memorial exhibition in 1904 (Graphic with a link to impression #K0880203). 7 He hoped to borrow one for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, but for some reason it was not included. 8

Several examples were shown in the Memorial Exhibitions after Whistler's death, with two different states shown at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904. One was exhibited in Paris in 1905, and one in London, lent by Henry Studdy Theobald (1847-1934), also in 1905. 9

SALES & COLLECTORS

An impression said to have been owned by the sitter was given much later by Lessing Julius Rosenwald (1891-1971) to the National Gallery of Art (Graphic with a link to impression #K0880204).
An impression of the second state from the collection of Philippe Burty (1830-1890) was sold at auction at Sotheby's, 1 May 1876 (lot 929) as 'undescribed state, with only one signature' on India paper, and was bought by Alphonse Wyatt Thibaudeau (ca 1840- d.1892) for £3.10.0 for the British Museum (Graphic with a link to impression #K0880202). One from the important collection of the late Joshua Hutchinson Hutchinson (ca 1829 - d.1891) was sold at Sotheby’s, 3 March 1892 (lot 127) and bought by Edmund F. Deprez (1851-1915) of Deprez & Gutekunst for a much higher price - £10.10.0.
