Bibi Lalouette is signed and dated '1859' on the copper plate.
Whistler made a number of portraits in Paris in 1859 including Bibi Valentin [34], Z. Astruc, Editor of 'L'Artiste' [36], Whistler with a hat [44], C. L. Drouet, Sculptor [35], Fumette, Standing [59], Fumette's Bent Head [58] and Finette [61]. Of these Bibi Valentin is the most closely related in subject, scale and technique.
