Rarely exhibited, impressions of The Dog on the Kennel were shown in exhibitions organised by private clubs for connoisseurs and collectors, including the Union League Club in New York in 1881, lent by Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) (), and the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900, lent by Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) (). 15

Impressions were also available for sale at H. Wunderlich & Co., in New York, in 1898 - when one was bought by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) () - and in 1903. 16

Finally, it was shown at the Memorial Exhibitions after Whistler's death, including being exhibited at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904 and another being lent from the Royal Collection to the London show of 1905. 17

After being printed by Auguste Delâtre (1822-1907), impressions were acquired by several collectors in Paris, possibly about the time that the 'French Set' was being printed. Collectors included Philippe Burty (1830-1890), George Aloysius Lucas (1824-1909), and Alfred Beurdeley (1847-1919) (, and ). The British Museum is the first documented British collection to acquire an impression, from Percy Thomas (1846-1922) on 13 July 1872 (). 18

Burty's impression was sold in 1876, being bought by 'Wilson' for £0.8.0. 19 It was acquired by Henry F. Sewall (1816-1896) and then by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, in 1897 (). An impression owned by James Anderson Rose (1819-1890) was sold at Sotheby's in a three-day sale from 27 June 1876 (lot 671) and bought by 'Wilson'. Another impression, owned by Joshua Hutchinson Hutchinson (ca 1829 - d.1891), was sold after his death, at Sotheby's, 3 March 1893 (lot 51), for £0.11.0. The London print dealer, Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851) bought one for £0.18.0 at Sotheby's in 1896, and sold this or another on behalf of 'a Gentleman' at auction in 1900, with an impression of Longshore men [52], for £1.4.0. 20

Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought first and second states from the collection of Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910), through H. Wunderlich & Co. in 1898 (, ). Second states went to a number of public collection: from Percy Thomas (1846-1922) to the Victoria and Albert Museum (); from Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) to New York Public Library (); from Gardiner Greene Hubbard (1822-1897) to the Library of Congress (); Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) to the Art Institute of Chicago (), and so on.
