EXHIBITIONS

Impressions were exhibited in New York by H. Wunderlich & Co. in 1898 and 1903, the latter probably from the collection of Bernard Buchanan MacGeorge (1845?-1924), and later bought by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2660107). 9 Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) lent an impression to the Caxton Club exhibition in Chicago in 1900. 10

After Whistler's death an impression was shown at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904, and John Charles Sigismund Day (1826-1908) lent one to the Whistler Memorial show in London in 1905. 11

SALES & COLLECTORS

Whistler recorded printing five impressions of 'Furniture Shop' on 16 May 1887 and two on 6 June. 12 Three of these were sent to Messrs Dowdeswell at £5.5.0 each, but returned shortly afterwards. 13

Whistler sold an impression of 'The Furniture Shop' through Wunderlich's of New York to Ross Revillon Winans (1850-1912) on 3 May 1888 for £5.5.0. 14 It is not entirely clear but it would seem that Wunderlich's also bought an impression, 'Furniture shop - Chelsea', which they had in stock in 1897 at the price of £5.5.0. 15 The similarity of the title and subject to other etchings makes this difficult to establish.

An impression was sold from the collection of the late Joshua Hutchinson Hutchinson (ca 1829 - d.1891) at Sotheby’s, London, 3 March 1892 (lot 317) for £3.0.0 to the London print dealer Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851).

Whistler bequeathed six impressions to his executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2660112, Graphic with a link to impression #K2660111, Graphic with a link to impression #K2660110, Graphic with a link to impression #K2660109, Graphic with a link to impression #K2660108). One she sold to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) in 1904 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2660103). Freer had bought another - the first state - from Frederick Keppel (1845-1912) of F. Keppel & Co. in 1902 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2660102). One impression owned by Bernard Buchanan MacGeorge (1845?-1924) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2660107), was later bought by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938), probably from Wunderlich's (stock no. a 37369). Other early collectors included Henry Harper Benedict (1844-1935) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2660001) and Harry Brisbane Dick (1855-1916) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2660104).
