It was first exhibited by H. Wunderlich & Co., New York, in 1898. Impressions of two different states, probably bought from Wunderlich's, were lent by Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) to the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900 (

SALES & COLLECTORS
Whistler sold two impressions in 1897 to the New York print firm, H. Wunderlich & Co., for £4.4.0 each, and they recorded two impressions - of the first and second state - sold by 1899. 10 Impressions of two different states were owned by Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) by 1900 (, ). Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought an impression of the first state, said to have come from the collection of James Cox-Cox (ca 1849- d.1901), from Obach's in London in 1903 (). An impression originally owned by John Henry Wrenn (1841-1911) is now in the Library of Congress ().
