The copper plate is not stamped with a maker's mark, nor is it the same size as any other etching.
The copper plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from just to left of centre at the bottom to upper right.
