TECHNIQUE
It is a drypoint, tentatively drawn with broken lines and a little diagonal shading. Whistler seems to have rubbed down the copper plate, and did not complete the portrait.
PRINTING
Only two proofs appear to have been printed (
,
). One impression is in dark brown ink on light grey medium-weight 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper (
), the other in black ink on ivory, Pro Patria watermarked, laid paper (
). Neither are trimmed or signed. It is not absolutely certain that the plate was printed by Whistler.
