TECHNIQUE
The plate for Château de Verneuil, Touraine, was executed in pure etching. Remnants of an earlier subject were scraped out but are visible under the landscape (see

Two impressions of this rare etching are in black ink, printed with light tone, on ivory laid paper (, ) and two on cream Japanese paper, as thin as tissue (, ). In 1889 Whistler noted that he had one impression in stock. 12 Since he sold two impressions at a later date, he must have printed some more about that time, or simply miscounted.
