TECHNIQUE
Children's Fruit Barrow is almost completely in etching, with just a few patches of drypoint shading added in the second state. An impressionistic sketch, it was drawn with great freedom, with broken, undulating and jaggedly bouncing lines, giving a strong impression of spontaneity. The very rough diagonal shading on the window, with patches of shading interspersed with white areas, again suggests space and light.
PRINTING
Only two impressions of Children's Fruit Barrow are recorded (
, ). Only one has been located; it is of the first state, and was printed in dark brown ink on ivory laid paper with a partial watermark, possibly the Strasbourg Lily (). Both impressions were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them.
