The copper plate was almost certainly made by a local craftsman in Venice. 4 It is close in size to one other Venice copper plate, The Little Lagoon [216]. However, Whistler acquired a variety of sizes of plate in Venice from different manufacturers, so size alone is not conclusive evidence of the plate's source. There is a prominent vice mark at the lower edge, where it must have been held during the reworking of the plate.

It was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with A Set of Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886.
The copper plate is now badly pitted and scratched, and there is an acid spot at the right edge. It was cancelled in two stages with multiple crossing diagonal lines, and, later, varnished. The plate is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 5
