Passages de l'Opéra probably dates from 1888. The trees in the etching appear to be largely leafless, suggesting a date of February or March, or just possibly April 1888, when Whistler was staying at the Hotel du Tibre in Paris. The etching was first sold on 29 June 1888. 1 Another etching dating from this trip is Quai de Montebello 385.
