The copper plate for Archway, Brussels has no maker's mark. It was close in size to the plates for The Fur Cloak - Mrs Herbert 367,
York Street, Westminster 382, Atelier de Bijouterie 378, The Busby 368, dating from 1887, and one from slightly later,
Balustrade, Luxembourg Gardens 465.
The plate for Archway, Brussels was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the upper left corner.
