This plate was begun in pure etching, and just one small area of drypoint shading was added in the second state.

There was a small print-run of Flower Market, Brussels. The first proof, mostly in etching, was printed in black ink on ivory laid paper (), as were subsequent impressions (, ). They are all trimmed to the platemark and signed on a tab with Whistler's butterfly and 'imp.' to show that he printed them.
