PRINTING

Only three impressions of this rare etching have been located. All are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them. Two of these were printed in dark brown ink on laid paper with a partial 'PRO PATRIA' watermark (the '1st proof', , and ). Whistler was partial to 'Pro Patria' paper, and at least 100 such sheets were used by him in the years from 1886 on.
