Gates, City, London dates from 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date.
The copper plate is very close in size to several other plates such as Booth at a Fair 257 and The Little Nurse, Grays Inn 286, including some that definitely date from 1887, such as Return to Tilbury 311.
It is one of a series of etchings made in and around Grey's Inn at this date, including Doorway, Gray's Inn 289 and The Steps, Gray's Inn 282.
