The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.'
It is close in size to a large number of plates including another London view (Cutler Street, Houndsditch 361), one Jubilee naval scene (The Visitors' Boat 303), figure subjects (i.e. Cameo, No. 1 (Mother and Child) 459) and several continental scenes (i.e. Fishing Quay, Ostend 351, Little Drawbridge, Amsterdam 448). These date from between 1887 and 1889.
It was in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903, bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), and given by her to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower right corner.
