The plate has no maker's stamp, but it was among the basic sizes provided by Hughes & Kimber (see for instance, Rochester Row, Westminster 383 and Clothes-Exchange, Houndsditch. No. 2 359). It is of a size very popular with Whistler (another Chelsea subject of the same size is Merton Villa, Chelsea 381).
The copper plate remained in Whistler's estate and was given to the University of Glasgow by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower right corner.
