The copper plate has no maker's mark. It was close in size to a number of etchings including several figure subjects (The Fur Cloak - Mrs Herbert 367, Nora Quinn 364 and The Busby 368) and continental views (Passages de l'Opéra 386, Archway, Brussels 344 and Balustrade, Luxembourg Gardens 465).
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was given by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the upper left corner.
