The copper plate has no maker's mark, but is similar in size to several other plates of similar date, Bird-Cages, Chelsea 297, Merton Villa, Chelsea 381, Clothes-Exchange, Houndsditch. No. 2 359, Rag Shop, Milman's Row, Chelsea 329, and Quai de Montebello 385.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line at right.
