STATE

Four states are known.

State 1

Etching: K2280202
There is no signature or inscription.
The rigging of the central mast on the steamboat at left is incomplete; there are only one or two figures, faintly suggested, at the edge of the quay at lower right.

State 2

Etching: K2280104
The central mast on the steamboat at left is partly removed, along with some details on the horizon behind it; the outer curving line by the quay is extended; several more figures are partly added in drypoint at the left and centre of the quay; the outline of a curving prow is added above the central group of sketched figures.

State 3

Etching: K2280102
The central mast on the steamboat at left is redrawn and its rigging completed with drypoint lines; reflections are added below the largest boat under sail.

State 4

Etching: K2280203
The upper part of the outer curving line is removed or worn away; spots of foul biting appear, mostly at the top of the image.
