TECHNIQUE
The plate was executed primarily in etching, with drypoint additions to the quayside and the steamboat's mast and rigging. In the fourth state, foul biting from acid droplets, showing directional wiping marks, probably indicates an accidental spill of etching acid. At that point, work on the plate ceased.
PRINTING
Four impressions have been located, all printed in black ink on laid paper. For instance, one first state is on cream laid paper with a 'KF' countermark (), and later states are on ivory laid paper () and off-white laid paper with a watermark of clasped hands in a shield surmounted by a helmet ().
